This was a two-week human factors project that dealt with many aspects of the interaction between the machine and the shopper. By combining elements of the screen interface with the physical interface, I was able to create a more seamless experience. For example, the scan symbol was repeated throughout the design to reinforce the connection of the screen and physical interfaces. Another example is the physical receipt would printout directly over the virtual one on screen.

A major problem with existing self-checkouts is what to do with the shopping cart. Normally, a linear approach to the layout of the machine is taken, forcing customers to move their shopping cart several times in an ungraceful fashion. My solution was to use a circular layout. As a customer came to the Self-Checkout, they would leave the cart in a position where it would be easily accessible to leave the store when they were finished.
