In the summer of 2003, I interned with furniture designer and manufacturer, Blu Dot.

The firm is best summed up by their website: "Blu Dot was founded by John Christakos, Charles Lazor and Maurice Blanks. The firm began as a loose collaborative of three college friends trained in architecture and art, based on the premise that design should be affordable. The partners chose furniture as the subject of interest and opened a studio and operations in Minneapolis in 1996. Blu Dot has begun to realize their vision with a collection of over 40 pieces that are both elegantly abstract and unambiguously functional."

My day-to-day tasks included concept work for future lines, building prototypes, producing step-by-step instructions for consumers, and any neccesary project support. For example, if we needed sheets of plywood, I would go get them. If we needed to take pictures for the website, the other interns and I would take pictures. If we needed beer for our weekly game of croquet, I would go get the beer. Overall, it was a great experience in which I learned a ton about design, craft, and the business behind making a company sucessful.
